2017 Shannons Melbourne Winter Classic Auction

Event:  2017 Shannons Melbourne Winter Classic Auction

Date:  17 July 2017 @ 7pm

Location:  40 Corporate Drive, Heatherton, Victoria

Last night saw something of a resetting of pricing for Victorian 3-digit heritage plates.

203 was always expected to be strong, and didn’t disappoint with a figure of $170,000.

The big surprises where 439 and 586 which comfortably hit six-figures, selling for $114,000 and $116,000 respectively.

Usually six-figure sales are reserved for 1xx and 2xx plates, so for seemingly random 4xx and 5xx plates to hit this figure is a big deal.

Even the highest numbered 3-digit, 960, was only one bid away from six-figures at $98,000.  It was a particularly nice number however.

There were no great surprises in the 4-digit results, although this is the first time I can recall all 4-digits selling for more than $30,000 at a single auction.

3 digit:

  • 203 – $170,000 (34 bids)
  • 439 – $114,000 (29 bids)
  • 586 – $116,000 (27 bids)
  • 731 – $83,000 (20 bids)
  • 960 – $98,000 (32 bids)

4 digit:

  • 1313 – $42,000 (14 bids)
  • 1543 – $30,000 (8 bids)
  • 2244 – $35,000 (10 bids)
  • 4111 – $36,000 (11 bids)
  • 7776 – $34,000 (10 bids)

5 digit:

  • 11777 – $24,000 (15 bids)
  • 33330 – $18,000 (10 bids)

Original price guides and commentary:

Twelve Victorian heritage plates will be offered at this auction, including five 3-digit plates, five 4-digit plates and two 5-digit plates.

The standout plate is undoubtedly 203, which is being offered by a private seller rather than VicRoads.  It had previously been spotted on a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S back in 2008.

Vic '203' on a Porsche 911 4S.

How much could 203 reach?  Based on recent results it would have to be close to $150k.  Shannons have a price guide of $125k – $140k, however their guides are often well below the actual sale price.

Recent sales in the 2xx range include 282 for $170k in May this year and 230 for $135k in early 2016.

The plates to be offered and their price guides are detailed below:

3 digit:

  • 203 – $125k – $140k
  • 439 – $50k – $70k
  • 586 – $50k – $70k
  • 731 – $50k – $65k
  • 960 – $50k – $65k

4 digit:

  • 1313 – $20k – $30k
  • 1543 – $20k – $30k
  • 2244 – $20k – $30k
  • 4111 – $20k – $30k
  • 7776 – $20k – $30k

5 digit:

  • 11777 – $12k – $16k
  • 33330 – $12k – $16k

Shannons have updated their price guides after many years for this auction.

The three digit plates were previously $40k – $55k for most combinations other than those below number 400.  This has now moved to a more variable method by the looks of it.

4-digit plates have been bumped to reflect the considerable price increases enjoyed recently. For years the guide has been $14k – $18k, however it’s now changed to $20k – $30k.

The 5-digit price guides have also had a slight bump, going from $10k – $15k to $12k – $16k.
