2015 Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic Auction

2015 Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic Auction

Event:  2015 Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic Auction

Date:  23 November 2015

Location:  321 Warrigal Road, Cheltenham, Victoria

Fourteen Victorian heritage number plates were offered at this auction, including six 3-digit plates, four 4-digit plates and four 5-digit plates.

The stand-out plate was the 3-digit 180 which sold for $140,000.  This is considerably lower than the $171,000 sale of 162 at an earlier auction this year, however the plate is a slightly higher number, and some buyers are put off by the number zero thanks to the many fake plates which use the letter o as a substitute for the zero.

The 4-digit plates managed some good figures, in particular 1116 which sold for an impressive $39,000.  I haven’t gone through the figures, but I can’t recall a 4-digit selling more than this at auction.

For those on a budget, the 5-digit heritage plate 72820 sold for the bargain price of $5,500.  This would certainly have made a great entry level plate for someone.

3 digit:

  • 180 – $140,000 (24 bids)

  • 722 – $60,000 (28 bids)

2015 Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic Auction

Original commentary and price guides

Fourteen Victorian heritage number plates will be offered at this auction, including six 3-digit plates, four 4-digit plates and four 5-digit plates.

The stand-out plate is the very low 180, followed by 297.  Both of these plates must be offered by private sellers rather than VicRoads, as it was confirmed at the last auction that 408 was the lowest number they held.

With 162 selling for a mighty impressive $171,000 at auction in July this year, it will be very interesting to see if such a high price can be maintained with another low plate starting with a ‘1’.
